massage benefits
-
The ability to feel with the hands; exploring the bodily tissues and mechanical systems (circulatory, lymph, nervous, musculature) by way of the skin and the connective tissue, known as fascia. Massage is unique in that it gives therapists a chance to spend more time with clients “hands on” than virtually anyone else in the health field.
-
For instance, sighing, yawning, change in breathing, stomach gurgling, emotional feelings, expression and movement of intestinal gas, falling in and out of sleep.
-
Great body therapeutics should go beyond relaxation, though sometimes that’s really any of us need; to feel comforted and nurtured is relaxation. It is part of an integral and comprehensive approach to health. It is facilitated mobility to soothe discomfort and ease pain. A little touch goes a long way !

Medical Massage is a term used to indicated a massage specifically applied to treat muscular dysfunctions that can be perceived as a medical issue. However, a muscular dysfunction is not necessarily a medical issue which requires a medical release. Therefore, a massage practitioner who provides medical massage may provide treatment for muscular dysfunction without requiring a prescription.

MLD is a very light pressure massage technique designed to move fluid just below the surface of the skin. It increases circulation, reduces eczema, and helps to encourage the removal of waste the lymphatic system naturally provides already. Though with the removal of lymph nodes or compromised nodes in general, MLD is often highly recommended on a regular basis (especially when visiting altitude from the valleys).
-
Putting too much energy in the direction that you expect things to move. And maybe by reducing the amount of force and letting it move in other directions, you might find yourself in a different place with a different perspective. It’s how to learn by reducing effort so you can feel more movement and improve. It’s not always about repetition, but about the exploration of the movement.
-
Muscles that fire together, wire together. Brain and body firing patterns that retrain movement patterns and through movement awareness and practicality. Learning to break unnecessary patterns and restore habits of dissociation.
pain education
-
Muscle and connective tissues can bind to the myelin sheathing that surrounds nerves. These adhesions can prevent the nerves from gliding properly within the nerve sheaths. This binding and/or adhesion is often the cause of nerve impingements and other painful nerve disorders.
-
No. Atrophy of supporting musculature is often a cause of pain as well. Weakness causes pain. No amount of pressure or frequency of massage will replace the body’s need for strength. Without the maintaining and building of muscles, bone density is compromised as well.
-
When clients are taking prescription strength medications, they may have a diminished capacity to feel pressure or experience pain. It is best to schedule massage treatments when medications are at their lowest in the body, prior to the next dose. Researching medications provides the massage therapist with information regarding the likelihood of such effects. Also, when working with clients who take prescribed medication, massage therapists should work conservatively to avoid over-treating or causing damage.
contraindications
-
The mother can receive a massage immediately but may not receive an abdominal massage until the scar has fully healed; typically 5-6 weeks.
-
Yes. No thermo-therapy should be used. Studies have shown that the application of heat can elevate blood pressure.
-
Only if fresh socks are worn with only pressure point work applied.
pressure EDUCATION
-
The effect of deep transverse friction is to created micro tears within muscle areas of low vascularity and stagnation. This triggers the body’s natural inflammation process to remove, repair and regenerate healthy tissue.
-
No, deep tissue massage is about approaching the body with keen awareness and sensitivity in navigating into the musculature. It’s all about properly warming up the fascia so the practitioner can sink into the muscle belly with effectiveness. When someone forces their way into the body without working their way in layer by layer, that’s when deep tissue can feel painful and damaging. Feeling sick after that type of approach is common and many clients are not receiving proper deep tissue work, when that happens, and that’s the honest truth!!

Thermotherapy of any kind of heat modality (even post workout) creates more viscosity within the body's tissues by allowing the fascia to become more pliable and therefore massage can better attain the muscle belly with more efficiency, thus allowing more bang for your buck, so to speak. Less warming and more working out the deeper layers of kinks, malfunction, congestion, etc.
-
No. Cryotherapy (cooling inflammation) with the use of cold packs or immersing oneself in Lake Tahoe, river, or other cold source. Hot tubs are user discretion, though not advised post deep tissue target practice in particular.
-
Daily morning and evening dry brushing stimulates the lymphatic system, all natural oils/creams/butters nourish the largest organ of your body (your skin), hydrate your cells while stimulating more elimination of waste of your lymph system through urine, and movement awareness keeps you honest with yourself (even if it’s simply moving around on the floor and allowing the time to feel yourself; sometimes that’s all some of us need. To do nothing, don’t call it anything, no particular “way”, “method”, “theory” …..just your body and breath exploring itself without agenda.
Q&A with Lauren

I chose to be trained as a massage therapist in Maui, HI back in 2001. At first, I thought it a necessary vocational choice in order to raise my son as a single mother with no child support. I had experienced massage throughout my teenage years, and know how impactful that person was in my life. Come to find out, I have a gift!! It’s pretty simple, I pay attention to the client on the table and encourage breath work (ALOHA). My mind isn’t distracted with other thoughts outside of being completely attentive to the client in the massage. My teachers took notice and apparently my 5,000+ clients have too.

Bodywork can be like solving a riddle. Although riddles can be frustrating, there is always an answer. Many factors contribute to body’s natural ability to heal, and I enjoy being a conduit as an additional source of understanding in the integral therapies approach to health.

I am grateful for my veracity as a professional in the very broad range of approach to massage and bodywork. I uphold a strong code of ethics with aligned intention for the greatest good of everyone. Awakening the innate intellect, wisdom of every body to perceive honest insight and keen awareness of one’s individual homeostasis (one’s own healing system)
